As an armed group masquerading as environmentalists infiltrates a community of miners, the village captain, Kapitana, rushes to secure a permit that would allow them to keep their livelihood in mining. The lives of Elmer and Linda, a newly engaged couple, get caught between conflicting human and environmental rights. The film tries to capture a topsy-turvy reality much more complex than stereotypes characterizing mining as evil and advocacies for environmental protectionism as the font of goodness.

EDSA
(EDSA)
2016

An opportunistic entrepreneur develops a bond with a streetkid trying to help him get to his business meeting in Makati. A teacher from the province haggles with a taxi driver, a former OFW, whether the country should follow world standards on basic education. A snatcher attempts to reform himself with the help of a nurse by trying to return what he has stolen. In this film, EDSA becomes a microcosm for the cultural and national condition of Filipinos, and a metaphor for the delayed progress they are all aiming for as a country.

As Irene’s health condition worsens, her entire family is thrown into shambles as bad memories from her past, as well as Ed’s life, add further pain to what she is going through. The film explores the varying degrees and forms of surveillance which are at the heart of the relationship between a schizophrenia patient and a caregiver. The film connects the disease to desire for authoritarian rule in the Philippines, relating it to trauma from the martial law years.
